Indra, a global consulting and technology company, has achieved Level 2 B-BBEE (broad-based black economic empowerment) certification, with 30% black ownership (black women owned).
This score demonstrates the company's commitment, not only regarding economic interest and its vocation of remaining in the African country, but also its support of governmental policies aimed at social transformation and modernisation.
Indra promotes and supports the modernisation of South African companies and public administrations through innovation and technology, contributing towards the development of the country's main economic sectors and, in short, of society.
Likewise, the company is committed to the most disadvantaged groups of South African society and develops projects that bring technologies closer to those objects of the greatest exclusion. It participates in initiatives to improve the education of the most disadvantaged classes, provides support for employment generation, black senior and middle management, advanced skills development and youth-oriented learning programmes.
The achievement Indra has earned by obtaining the Level 2 B-BBEE certification will also benefit the company's clients and the different communities in South Africa driven by the company.
Indra launched its operations in South Africa in 2012 and has its headquarters in Johannesburg. To date, the company's main activity is focused on the sectors of defence and security, transport and traffic, public administrations, healthcare and energy, though the country offers major opportunities in all of the sectors in which Indra operates.
Presence in Africa
Indra has been operating in Africa since 1995 and has offices in Algeria, Morocco, Kenya, Senegal, Mozambique and South Africa. Its solutions are used in most of the continent's countries through major projects in key markets for the economy.
In this respect, the multinational is an outstanding leader in the implementation of energy solutions for electrical power companies in Africa, where it has been involved in some of the most important modernisation processes undertaken in the last 15 years. Indra's management systems for energy companies help manage the utilities in Kenya (KPLC, KenGen, NCWSC), Zimbabwe (ZETDC), Zambia (ZESCO), Ethiopia (EEPCO), Uganda (UMEME) and Cameroon (Eneo), among others. Its most recent projects include the implementation of its support solutions for commercial and management processes in the distribution network of EDM (Electricidade de Mocambique), Mozambique's public electrical power company, and ECG (Electricity Company of Ghana), Ghana's biggest energy distribution company.
Indra also has a strong position in Africa as a provider of air traffic control and management systems and airport services. Recently, the Ugandan Civil Aviation Authority commissioned the multinational to supply and install its advanced passenger information system, InSIGHT, at Entebbe international airport, and the main airports in Kenya as well as the country's airport operator, KAA, use Indra's management systems. Also in Kenya, Indra's air traffic control systems have been installed in the East African School of Aviation. Meanwhile, Nigeria's main airline, Arik, has implemented Indra's revenue accounting solutions.
On the African continent, Indra has also supplied its radio navigation aids for the navigation service provider ASECNA (Agence pour S'ecurit'e de la Navigation A'erienne en Afrique et `a Madagascar), which operates in 17 countries.
Recently, the company signed an agreement to develop smart urban traffic management projects in Algeria's largest cities. Through this agreement, Indra becomes a member of Mobeal, a public-private joint venture, in which the Algerian public companies EGCTU and ERMA hold equal shares of 51% and the Spanish companies Indra and Sice hold equal shares of 49%, with the objective of modernising the country's traffic management and urban lighting systems.
Through this agreement, this public-private joint venture will install, exploit and maintain traffic control systems and remote management of lighting, initially in Algiers during the first phase and in other large Algerian cities in subsequent phases.
